Establishment and Early Years:
• Founded in 1891 by local visionaries like Vinayak P. Karulkar, Keshav T. Karulkar, Haribhai Paranjpe, and others, the school aimed to educate the impoverished and backward community of Umbergaon.
• Initial challenges included lack of funds, furniture, and qualified teachers. Donations from philanthropists like Sheth Haribhai, Gopal T. Karulkar, and Sheth Nasarwanji helped establish basic infrastructure.
• In 1902, after a donation of Rs. 4,000 from Mawji Madhavji via Bhukhandas Bhanabhai, the school was renamed Mawji Madhavji School and expanded its facilities.
Management and Development:
• Over the years, management shifted between Deccan Education Trust (1919-1965), Indian Education Society (1976-1985), and Umbergaon EducationSociety (since 1985).
• Post-independence, Umbergaon transitioned from Maharashtra to Gujarat (1960), posing financial challenges that were met with generous donations from trustees and locals.
• The school currently educates 2,200 students across Gujarati and English mediums, offering education from playgroup to Class 12 (HSC).
Current Operations:
• Fee structure is minimal to support students, with grants from the Gujarat government for some classes.
• Despite fewer admissions in Gujarati-medium classes, the institution remains committed to providing quality education, particularly to poor students.
Legacy:
• Over 120+ years, the school has produced generations of successful students, cementing its position as a cornerstone of education in Umbergaon. It continues to thrive due to the dedication of trustees, teachers, and the support of donors.
